Neamț County, formerly Armotz, is a county in the Moldavian region, in the north-east of Romania, on the border between the Eastern Carpathians and the Moldavian Plateau, and it also stretches very slightly in the N-W part of Transylvania, including the commune of Bicaz-Chei. It is known especially for the beauty of the Ceahlău Massif, the reservoir (called Izvorul Muntelui) on the Bistrița river whose dam is located in the western part of the city of Bicaz, as well as the landscape in general, the monasteries (Agapia, Neamț, Secu , Sihăstria, Văratec, etc.), of natural reserves (Ceahlău National Park, Codrii de arama, Codrii de argint, Bison Reserve, etc.), of fortresses (Neamțului Citadel).
The seat of the county is the municipality of Piatra Neamț. The area of the county is 5,890 square km. The main watercourses: Moldova, Siret (between Doljești and Secuieni), Bistrita (between Broșteni and Buhuși), Bistricioara, Bicaz, Cracău, Tarcău, Ozana (also called Neamțu) and the Cuejd stream – which crosses the municipality of Piatra Neamț; the main lakes: Izvoru Muntelui, Pângărați, Vaduri and Bâtca Doamnei (lakes of hydropower interest). Maximum altitude: Vf. Ocolașu Mare (M. Ceahlău) 1,907 meters.
